I’m obsessed with what others think of me

This suddenly resurfaced for me last night at midnight when my neighbors were having a heated argument. The girl was crying, the guy was screaming and shutting the doors.

I was so shaken I could no longer sleep. Tossed & turned then gave up.

Went to my iPad to see how my last video was doing on YouTube (how shallow is that, I know, but how human!) and before I knew it I was watching a British TV documentary about 3 morbidly obese sisters getting a gastric bypass.

Yup, that just about sums up how the ‘suggested video’ feature works for me on Youtube!

I know, you might be thinking what this has to do with how to care less about what others think but you’ll find out very soon.

The show presented the sisters before surgery and a few months after. A little bit smaller, yes, but to me, they still looked pretty much the same after the bypass.

However, for them the change was RADICAL. Now a few pounds lighter and post-surgery, the biggest change they reported was that they could now go out to eat, walk to the nearest shop, and walk their kids to school.

Here comes the bombshell. It wasn’t their mobility that improved so much, it was their MINDSET!

Nobody cares

Before, they were too ashamed of their bodies to eat out, even to leave the house at all!

What if, just what if, these sisters knew that they could leave the house all along?

What if they knew that all these people they were afraid to be judged by didn’t give a toss, that in fact, NOBODY CARES?!

They could have had their dream life all along even without surgery and probably moved around more and lost a little weight in the process too.

How to care less about what others think: psychology

This in turn reminded me of the great book ‘The Four Agreements’ by Don Miguel Ruiz.

The second agreement is my all-time favorite: DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY.

Nothing others do is because of you.

What others say and do is a projection of their own dream, their own reality. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

In other words: NOBODY CARES.

This is just the intro, I haven’t gotten to what I’m trying to tell you yet!

‘Caring too much what others think’ disorder

We are all completely engrossed in our minds. Each one of us is completely in our head. Nobody has time or energy to think about anyone else. You might start calling it a disorder!

All those people that you are keeping up appearances for, you know, your co-workers, your neighbours, your relatives, they couldn’t care less.

Nobody cares and take it from me, I push the boundaries every day.

I walk barefoot, with long hair on my legs, without a bra, my boyfriend thirteen years younger, only to sit on the ground in public places and eat mass quantities of fruit with my bare hands (we are raw foodies, more on that later in this post).

You’d think surely this will attract attention? NO! Nobody bats an eye!

People are so busy inside their heads, they are in such a hurry they don’t allow themselves more than a glance. And even then, they carry on walking and in a second they’ve probably forgotten all about me!

How to be free from people’s opinions

Why am I telling you this?

To free yourself from the prison of your own mind.

The prison that you have put yourself in, with all the ‘shoulds’ that you made yourself believe you have to live up to.

All the appearances you keep up just so that you fit into what you perceive as the norms of society.

It’s a pointless effort – nobody cares!

They’re too caught up in their own mind-game to think about you at all. And that’s the best part yet!

This means you are FREE, free to do whatever you want, free to roam!

So dear friend, the next time you oversleep and have to show up to work without makeup for the first time? Relax. NOBODY CARES.

The next time you have no time to wash your hair again before that fancy evening outing and feel like apologising to everybody for your greasy hair? NOBODY CARES.

When you go to the shop downstairs in your food-stained oversized sweatpants and run into your ex? Relax. He doesn’t care.

Now, live a little, take your bra off, take your shoes off, put on the most ridiculous outfit & go out and dance as if no one is watching… because no one is.

Live a little! This is not a dress rehearsal – it’s the only life you’ve got. GO PLAY! 💃

How to care less about what others think: the magical diet

8 years ago I was in the same boat. Constantly worrying about what others might think of me and my actions.

Perhaps the most difficult belief to shed was that you need to eat ‘everything’ to be healthy and cook your food, especially in cold climates.

I’m so glad I listened to my intuition and gave the raw food diet a try. Within just a few days my worldview changed completely.

There’s something about raw foods that unclogs your brain and I had never felt that good in my life ever.

However, it was the long-term effects of the raw food diet that completely blew my mind. I healed from 20+ years of eating disorders, lost 70 pounds of excess weight, met the love of my life, and started traveling the world.

If I had cared for other people’s opinions I would have never dared to give this lifestyle a try. I’m so glad I did, it literally saved my life.
